We are honoured to announce that Monte Christo Winery has received an award of Merit at the Property Industry Awards, in the Heritage and Adaptive Reuses category.
Entries in our category hailed from across Aotearoa, showcasing the renewal of historic precincts, the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, and conservation projects.
Our stone winery, originally established in 1864, was the first winery in Central Otago and now proudly serves as our cellar door. This transformation involved an extensive adaptive reuse of the original building, preserving its historic charm.
Intricate adjustments were made to conserve the site, particularly the 150-year-old stonework. To ensure authenticity, we collaborated closely with Heritage New Zealand, who meticulously monitored details like stone choice and mortar colour during the restoration process.
It is wonderful to be recognised with this award alongside an impressive list of other historic sites from around New Zealand.
